How We Bill

Flat Fee Projects

Many clients need the cost certainty provided by a flat fee billing arrangement. Here’s how it works:
  1. We work with the client to define the scope of work for a particular project.
  2. We determine an appropriate flat fee.
  3. If we need to deviate from the originally defined scope of work, we can make a change to the scope of work and adjust the fee up or down as appropriate.
We like working on a flat fee basis because fees are agreed upon on the front end, allowing us focus on the work at hand.

Monthly Retainer

Some of our clients who have ongoing legal needs choose to pay RUBICON on a monthly retainer basis. This allows a client to “normalize” their legal bills allowing for better management of cash flow. Here’s how it works:
  1. We meet with the client to discuss their legal needs and budget. (If we already have a working history with the client, we will review past legal bills).
  2. We determine a monthly fee for a “all you can eat” type legal relationship.
  3. We periodically meet with the client to discuss whether the arrangement is working for each party.
We like this arrangement because it moves the focus away from fees. The primary focus becomes the attorney-client relationship.

Hourly Fee

Some of our clients prefer that we work on an hourly basis, particularly in situations where the client requires quick turnarounds and would rather not spend the time developing a scope of work. If we do work on hourly basis, we commit be as transparent as possible so as to avoid any surprise bills.

Deferred Legal Fees

Some of our early stage startup clients have significant legal needs, but limited resources. In certain situations, RUBICON will defer all legal fees until a funding event. Sometime we will require some form of equity in exchange for the deferral. Please contact us for more details on this type of an arrangement.
